Membership Form

Hello Kappas,

As mentioned at the last general meeting (October 5th), we have a local membership form that all PTK members need to fill out, regardless of your status (regular, provisional, prospective). This is for our personal club roster, and it is necessary to have so we can keep track of our members, and also so we can turn in a complete roster to ICC. We are in good standing with ICC, but a full roster is the one thing we are missing. We don’t want to jeopardize our standing over something so trivial!

The link to the membership form can be found under the ‘Become A Member’ tab on black navigation bar.

Please remember that this is NOT the same thing as the membership form to become an official member through the international PTK. That is located on ptk.org, and is what you fill out when you receive your passcode and pay the fee to join. Two separate entities, both need to be done.

The time has come for this year’s induction ceremony!

Induction is a ceremony to formally honor and welcome new members who have joined the International Phi Theta Kappa into the society with a night of recognition, friends, and food. It’s a lot of fun. Even if you were unable to attend a meeting this year, induction is great to join in on!

DETAILS!

Cost: Members are free, and it is $20 per guest (if you decide to bring family or friends)
RSVP: Please RSVP by 20 April to ptk.fullcoll@gmail.com, but money is due by 25 April

To pay for guests, please bring cash or check (made payable to Fullerton College) to the general meeting on 18 April, or the board meeting on 25 April (both at 3:15 in room 1440). If those times do not work, please call or text our chapter president, Charles Hesketh, at (714) 402-9566 to schedule an alternate time.

Last Meeting for Fall 2011

Today is the last meeting for Fall semester 2011. We will have a few announcements and some semester reflection. This semester was packed full of events and we had a lot of fun. The PTK officers would like to get some feedback on Members and Prospective Members’ experiences in the club. We’ve made a survey through SurveyMonkey to collect responses to general questions that will help us determine what to plan for next semester. Click here to take survey The more responses the better! We want to hear from you!

Enjoy the rest of your semester and good luck with finals!!!

Event Reminders

On Saturday, November 5th, PTK is returning to Faith’s house for Paint Your Heart Out’s Paint Day. More details will follow in a reminder email!

PTK will also be participating in Hot Meals again on Monday, November 7th, at the Orangethorpe Christian Church. We will be serving food to the homeless. Serving starts at 6 pm, but set up begins at 5 pm, if you would like to assist with that. We should be done by 8 pm.

If you signed up to volunteer for this event, you will be receiving a reminder email. If you find that you have had a change of plans or there is a schedule conflict, PLEASE notify the board members before the 7th via email. We are keeping track of who attends events so that those who fulfill the requirement of two per semester will receive the proper notation on their transcripts.

This is an important event, and a real opportunity to interact with those whom you are helping, which can be a great experience, as well as a learning experience.

Club Rush

We will be participating in another campus club rush on November 2nd, from 10 am to 1 pm, in the quad.

The theme is Aloha, so if you would like to volunteer at the table, you are welcome and encouraged to dress the part (if you can, of course). Either way, please stop by and help promote PTK to other students on campus.

This will count as one of the required two events per semester, so attend if you can!

The Present and Future

As the future leaders, business people, educators, health providers, civil servants, politicians, and general workers of the United States, it might be interesting to take a look at what is currently happening (and has been for quite a few years) in our economy, in relation to jobs, taxes, etc. As current students facing the realities of budget cuts in the forms of raised enrollment fees, fewer classes and in some cases, the elimination of classes, the cutting of weeks in a semester, and possibly the privatization of the community college in the future, it should definitely be something to think about.

This article, It’s the Inequality, Stupid, has eleven graphs and charts explaining tax inequalities and those citizens who reside in the top 1% of socioeconomic status. As the Occupy movement has spread to many major cities around the country, it might serve as some clarification as to the base of all the discontent.

Another article, posted by the Los Angeles Times “California leads the nation in escalation of college costs” might also be of more personally relevant interest as well. Among other facts about the CSU and UC costs, the article states, “At California’s community colleges, this year’s 37% tuition jump was the steepest percentage increase in the nation.”

How has this economic crisis affected you so far? How do you think it will affect your future, once you’re done with school and entering your career field? What are your thoughts and concerns? Do you agree or disagree with the sentiments of the Occupy movement? What are some budget cut remedies and alternatives you can think of, based on the chart information? Do you have any other information to share?

Thank you

Just wanted to say a quick thank you to those who showed up last night to help at the Día de los Muertos event. It was pretty amazing and a lot of fun, what with all the dancing, performances, music, food, and tables.

We hope you all enjoyed yourselves.

Scholarship Information/Event Sign Ups

Are up! We hope to add more scholarship information, but there are literally thousands of them out there. A good place to check is CollegeFish. Make that site your best friend; it has a ton of information about scholarships for specific colleges, PTK members, specialized scholarships (like major-based ones), organization-based scholarships, and general scholarships. It will also help you plan and fulfill your steps in applying to transfer. Use it, search it, bookmark it, be knowledgeable of it!

In other news, if you would like to sign up for the Día de los Muertos booth on Thursday, October 27th from 6:30 pm to 10:00 pm, go to the Event Sign Up Forms link in the navigation bar. Remember that you need to participate in at least two events to be considered an active member. Shifts are thirty minutes long, and you are welcome to stay longer.

beremedy

We talked about this project at the first meeting of the semester, and now we have more information (courtesy of Chuck and his attendance of the meeting on October 10th). This information was shared at the general meeting on October 19th.

Beremedy is a group that helps people with their immediate needs, using social networking, and now text messaging as well. When they become aware of a need in an area (for example, a tent, a blanket, a bed, ten beds, a pair of shoes — anything), they will send out a text message asking for help. These needs are met incredibly fast, and have been an invaluable help to many people.

If you would like to sign up to receive text messages, text LIFE to 35819, and follow the succeeding instructions. Don’t worry about spam or being texted too much; they’re only allowed to send out a small number of texts per month, so you won’t be inundated.

If you want any more information, check out their website http://beremedy.com, or email our PTK president Chuck at charlesdhesketh@gmail.com.
